About This Video

I took the Canon R5 Mark II out on a real wildlife walk with the RF 100-500mm to see how it behaves when I’m actually out chasing light and critters—not sitting at a desk reading specs. The morning started simple (goats, fog coming off the water), then turned into one of those walks where you’re glad you didn’t just go home—because the coyote showed up, and I got to see how this setup handles quick, unpredictable moments. I also talk through why I still lean on manual focus at times, especially when autofocus wants to jump to “anything but the thing I’m trying to shoot.” I get into how I think about shutter speed vs ISO with modern bodies. I’ll take the faster shutter and let ISO climb, because today’s cameras (and the software) clean up noise so well, and they’re simply better than the old DSLRs in that regard. By the end, I’m honest about my own back-and-forth: I started out thinking I was sending the R5 II back, then after editing, comparing, and thinking about pre-capture and future tests (extender, 600 f/4, 800mm, hummingbirds), I decided I’m keeping it—most likely selling or trading my original R5 instead. And yes… I still think the R7 autofocus might be better.
