About This Video

I took my new Canon R5 II out to Kenneth Hahn Park to do what I love doing most: put gear into real-world chaos and see what it actually gives me. It was a hot, crowded Saturday morning (like 80° around 8:30am), and I went hunting hummingbirds because they’re a legit stress test for any sensor and any autofocus system. I’m also juggling heat management, so I shot parts of this on my Nikon ZR because I know the R5 II can start to overheat when the temps climb. In this video I talk through why I “broke down” and bought the R5 II used (30 days to decide if it stays), how I’m using pre-capture, and what I’m still wishing Canon would fix—like giving me an easier way to toggle pre-capture on/off. I’m shooting 20 fps and I was impressed with the stickiness, but I also saw rolling shutter at 1/2500 and had to bump to 1/4000 to calm it down (it’s still there). I also get into the lens side: yes, the 600 f/4 is a dream, but it’s heavy, and honestly I’d rather run the 600 f/11 or 800 f/11 with extension tubes for closer focusing when I’m out walking. And like always—color is a big deal for me, and I’m looking forward to grading the 8K RAW and seeing what the files really hold.
