About This Video

I’m out at Malibu Lagoon for an early sunrise session, keeping an eye on my bag (and the dogs that aren’t supposed to be there), and putting a super affordable wildlife setup through its paces: the Canon R50 paired with the RF 600mm f/11. This combo is limiting in a bunch of ways—no zoom, fewer focus point options than I’m used to—and it forces me to relax and shoot differently. I’m basically at the mercy of what the camera wants to do: it grabs the eye, I push the button, and I let it do its thing. And honestly? I’m having an absolute blast with it. I’m also mixing in some fun vintage glass—an old manual-focus Nikon 24mm adapted to the R50—because I like keeping it playful, especially around sunrise. Out there I’m seeing pelicans, plovers, dowitchers, surfers, and the big surprise of the day: oyster catchers. I’ve never seen them at this spot, so that was the highlight for me (besides the sunrise, which is always amazing here). Everything you saw was handheld, I missed plenty of shots (including some osprey action), but that’s part of it. Perfect camera? Absolutely not. But it’s a neat little camera, that shutter “snap” is just fun, and the results can be way better than you’d expect for the price.
