About This Video

I took you along on a real photography adventure around Cambria, CA—late-night beach shooting, cold sunrise stops, and a whole lot of “what am I doing out here?” energy. I’m out on the sand after dark with the tide coming in, trying long exposures and star work, and I even take a swing at stacking Orion’s Belt and the Orion Nebula. It’s eerie being alone on the beach that late, but that’s part of the fun. Gear-wise, I’m shooting my Canon R5 with a 35mm f/2, and I’ll tell you straight: I love that lens. From there I roll into the next morning at Lake Tascadero—37 degrees cold—checking for eagles that never show, grabbing what I can (like a blue heron), and then pushing on because the light and the weather keep changing. I’m also mixing bodies and lenses depending on the conditions: R7 with a 600mm f/4 when the light is low, R50 with the 100–500, and the R5 for sunrise and the files I actually enjoy editing. Biggest takeaway? The “plan” never survives the day, and that’s what makes it an adventure—just get out, shoot, and live it right now.
