About This Video

This is my last video and my final assessment of the Canon R6 III before it goes back tomorrow, and I wanted to be straight with you about what I noticed in the real world. I’m a Canon fanboy—I’ve owned or shot a pile of their bodies (R1, R3, R5, R7, R8, R10, R50, R50V), and to me Canon autofocus is second to none. The hit rate on the R6 III has been phenomenal, and the EVF is very, very nice. Stabilization, when I could get everything working, was pretty doggone amazing handheld—especially paired with an IS lens. But the big thing I couldn’t get past is the look of the files. The photos out of this camera felt washed out to my eyes, kind of like the old Sony “too clinical” feel, where I’m pushing sliders all the way up just to get depth back. Pre-capture also wasn’t a win for me—too many extra frames to cull and dump. Rolling shutter is a little better than the original R5, but still pretty bad when you’re doing things like hummingbirds that really tax sensor readout. On the video side, I ran into problems with the files—RAW gave me weird double-image behavior across Premiere (beta and regular) and DaVinci, plus errors that made me give up and shoot simpler PQ high-def as a safety. Add in little usability stuff like the video/photo switch placement, and at the end of the day it’s just not the body for me. I’m sticking with my R5/R7/R50/R50V (and even my old D800 for fun) and I’ll keep an eye on the R7 II—unless it comes with a faster/stacked sensor, I’ll rent it, not buy it.
