About This Video

In this one I’m out in the field doing what I always do—chasing light that isn’t always perfect. I exposed for the background, I’ve got my little SpyderCube (gray/white/black) with me, and I’m trying to make sure skin tones don’t get weird—especially if you’re shooting in a log profile and you actually care about matching color later. The catch is I’m by myself, so I’m guessing a bit as I go, and that’s where having simple, portable lighting makes a big difference. I show the small bar-style light I’ve used before, but the real “new toy” is an inflatable Ulanzi light. I literally blow it up with one breath, turn it on, and it gives a nice soft fill that helps me look properly exposed even when I’m in shade (like when the sun is blocked by a tree). It’s not the brightest thing in the world, but for around 30 bucks it’s ridiculously fun and genuinely useful—plus it rolls up and disappears into a bag. I also share a bit from my morning shoot (Canon R5 with the 800mm f/11 on hummingbirds), and I wrap it up with my usual reminder: I like gear, I like toys, and I’m out here having an ungodly amount of fun.
