About This Video

I’m out by the car before dawn, waiting on a (probably) uneventful sunrise, but with a purpose: I want to compare how different vintage lenses flare on my Canon R50. Yesterday, while editing shots from a Hanamar 35mm, it hit me again—these lenses are not all the same. What I’m chasing is that flare color, that warm orange glow, and some lenses just have it while others don’t. This morning I’ve got a Pentax lens on, and even through the back of the camera I can see that beautiful orange rendering starting to happen. I walk through my simple sunrise setup—ND filter on, shooting dark on purpose, around 1 second at ISO 200 with a 2-second timer—because modern sensors let me pull shadows back without blowing highlights. I also talk about why I like vintage manual lenses for this kind of work: full control over aperture and focus, and you can often find them anywhere from about $50 up to $300… or a grand, depending on the glass. This video turns into a two-parter, because seeing the different lens looks is just too cool not to keep going.
