About This Video

I took the Canon R6 III back out to Kenneth Hahn Park on a cloudy, overcast day—my “final time out” with it—specifically for hummingbirds and finches. Last time I got heat for using the 100-500 f/7.1 at 500mm, but I use that lens there because the space is tight and the minimum focus distance matters. This time I brought my EF 600mm f/4 with no extender or teleconverter, and I added Canon’s native EF extension tubes so I could actually focus close enough in that cramped spot. I’ll show a few favorites (including a mouth-open hummingbird moment) and talk through what I’m seeing in real-world use. After multiple outings, my take is pretty consistent: the R6 III is a great camera, but it’s just not for me. I noticed rolling shutter, and I’m seeing RAW files that feel less saturated than what I get from the R5 (and especially the R5 II, which I loved for color—until overheating made it a no-go for how I shoot in LA/Arizona). Buffer performance in CRAW feels about like the original R5: it can run long on clean backgrounds, and it drops faster with busy backgrounds. If I’m spending money, I’d personally pick the original R5—cheaper, 8K RAW, and I’d rather have that flexibility than chase open-gate hype.
