About This Video

I headed out to Lake Casitas for a real-deal wildlife photo walk—muddy trails, frost on the ground, and that kind of quiet morning where you can hear woodpeckers before you see them. The mission was simple: eagles. Because of the rain, the gates were closed and I ended up doing about a half-mile walk to get into position, but it was completely worth it. Along the way I grabbed quick shots of whatever showed up—blue heron, egret, finches, and a few other birds—because I’m not out there forcing angles. I’m out there moving, watching, and taking what the lake gives me. Gear-wise, this day was all about my Canon R7 paired with the 600mm f/11, which I absolutely love. On the R7 that lens gives me roughly 960mm equivalent reach, and it’s a fun setup for eagles in flight and those moments like watching the male bring in sticks. I also talk through why “more reach” isn’t always the answer—atmospheric haze and heat distortion can trash sharpness at long distances, and you’ll really see it if you shoot video and watch it back. I wrap it up with why I prefer the R7 over the R50 for wildlife: more control, single-point focus when I want it, eye lock when I need it, and a manual focus ring workflow that helps me miss fewer shots.
