Digicams are having a bit of a moment again, so I finally caved and grabbed one for myself—well, technically the missus found it at the op shop for $10. In this video I’m playing around with the Canon Digital IXUS V3 (Euro-spec), and I walk through the whole “$10 for what?” reality check: it’s cheap at the counter, but once you factor in dead-ish batteries, no charger, a bigger CompactFlash card, and a reader, you’re realistically closer to about $60 all up. Still, for a tiny metal brick from 2002, it’s kind of mint what you get. I break down the specs and the real-world user experience—because honestly, it’s slow. Startup is slow, autofocus is slow, writing to the card is slow, and you’ve got JPEG only. But that’s also the point: it forces you to be more preemptive and intentional, and it’s a humbling reminder of how much modern tech carries us. I also talk CCD (without pretending I’m the ultimate authority): I just genuinely like the straight-out-of-camera color—blues and reds look pleasing and true to life without feeling overly stylized. If you want 2000s vibes and a camera that’s more about joy than perfection, a digicam might be exactly the move.
