About This Video

In this livestream Q&A, I sat down and answered the saddle pad, half pad, and girth questions you guys dropped for me over on the JETEquiTheory Instagram. We talked through both English and Western considerations, but the big theme stays the same: tack should support good saddle fit, not try to “fix” a saddle that doesn’t fit the horse (or the rider) in the first place. I also brought on Jochen Schleese to add his perspective, because he’s got a ridiculous amount of experience and a really helpful way of breaking down the “why” behind what we see under saddle. I go into how I think about pad thickness, materials, and when a half pad is actually appropriate versus when it’s just adding bulk and changing the balance of the saddle. We also get into girths—how they interact with the horse’s anatomy, why “tighter” isn’t automatically “better,” and what I look for when I’m troubleshooting slipping, pinching, or weird behavior that shows up during rides. If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by all the pad and girth options (and the marketing around them), this is meant to give you a practical framework so you can make choices that are kinder to your horse and more consistent for your training.
