About This Video

In this video, I’m talking about the “glitter dumpling” TikTok trend—aka the rainbow mystery bun/dumpling squishies that have people acting like they’re hunting a Willy Wonka golden ticket. I get why the mystery-box vibe is appealing (I’m literally a moth to a flame with anything claw-machine adjacent), and I’m not here to shame anyone for wanting a cute little fidget. I even shared why I’ve been looking for hand-busy toys myself when my anxiety spikes and I start picking at my skin. But the way some creators are taking this is where I’m side-eyeing hard. People are buying out Five Below, dropping $100+ just to pull the “secret” glitter one, and then ending up with piles of stuff they don’t even want—aka landfill speedrun. I also get into how this crosses into really gross behavior: adults snatching toys from kids, resellers overcharging like it’s a luxury collectible, and parents using child influencers for constant toy unboxings that normalize spending hundreds of dollars chasing a “rare” color. My takeaway is simple: whimsy is fine, fidget toys are fine, but the greedy, mindless overconsumption-for-clicks pipeline is getting way too normalized.
