In this tutorial I show you how I take a normal WordPress site and convert it into a static website using the Simply Static plugin. The whole idea is simple: a static site generator turns your WordPress pages into plain HTML/CSS/JS, so you can host it almost anywhere for very low cost (or free). In my example I export an Astra starter template site (built with Elementor), generate the static files, download the ZIP, and then deploy it to Cloudflare Pages. I also break down the real pros and cons. The big wins are performance, security, and maintenance: there’s no database, no PHP, and you’re not constantly updating WordPress/plugins/themes on a live server. The trade-off is you lose WordPress’s dynamic features, and editing after deployment is more inconvenient than just logging into wp-admin (the pro version helps, but it’s still different). If you need forms or ecommerce, you’ll typically plug in external services like Google Forms/Jotform or options like Snipcart, Square, or simple PayPal/Stripe checkouts. Finally, I show how to put the static site on a custom domain in Cloudflare, and I even saw a speed bump moving from the WordPress version (79) to the static version (92) in PageSpeed. For brochure sites, portfolios, and basic business sites, this is a really solid zero-cost, low-maintenance setup.
