About This Video

In this video I walk you step-by-step through a transmission fluid and filter service on a 2014–present Jeep Grand Cherokee with the ZF 8-speed (ZF8). I start by going over the exact supplies I use—at least 6–8 quarts of the correct Mopar 8-speed fluid and a new pan/filter assembly (the filter is built into the pan). Then I show you how I safely get the Jeep up in the air and level, with all four wheels off the ground, because we’re going to run the transmission through the gears and verify the final fluid level. From there I cover the full job: removing the 8mm Allen fill plug first, draining the pan, pulling the T40 Torx bolts, and dropping the pan while keeping control of the mess. I show you what to look for on the magnets—gray paste is normal, but chunks of metal are not. Then I clean the sealing surface, install the new pan, and torque the bolts to 89 in-lbs in a crisscross/star pattern. Finally, I refill it the right way: pump fluid in until it dribbles out, start it, top it off again, then set the level at the correct transmission temperature range (about 86–122°F) after cycling through the gears. Fluid level is critical on these, so don’t skip the temp check.
