A shoerail is the base where stair spindles are secured. The shoerail has a groove in it so the spindles can be attached to the closed staircase stringer without seeing nails or screws. See how this woodworking project comes together to finish off the top of the closed stringer before the railing is installed. See the playlist of all the videos in this staircase makeover project - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLdSuVz1n16d8_MK7VTqDkMu24NQGiIJhZ The process starts by cutting the shoerail material to rough length. Then it's sanded to remove the machine marks from the plane. The profile of the shoerail is a simple round over. It's cut with a palm router in two passes. The next step is to cut a groove, called a dado. The dado needs to be the same width as the stair spindles. The first cut is roughly in the middle, then the board is turned around and run against the table saw fence on the other side. The dado is then widened by moving the table saw fence closer to the blade and running the board through the saw on each side. This is done until the width of the dado matches the width of the stair spindles. The shoerail is then cut to fit the various stair sections. It's glued with construction adhesive and screwed through the dado to ensure it's sturdy enough to hold the stair spindles securely. See the installation of the spindles in the next episode in this staircase renovation series.
