How to Heat a Garage Workshop - Insulation and Space Heaters

Learn how to heat and insulate your garage workshop to protect your tools from rust. Condensation can form on cold tools, so it's important to keep your workshop heated to a minimum of 40 degrees Fahrenheit (10 degrees Celsius). Condensation will also form on metal surfaces when the air is much warmer than the metal, so a consistent temperature is best. My garage workshop has insulated walls with R-20 insulation. The ceiling has R-30 insulation. The floor has 3 1/2 inches of rigid foam insulation. But the most challenging part of insulating a garage workshop is dealing the garage door. I have an insulated door, but it isn't enough insulation to keep the cold out in the winter. I use a foundation blanket to create an extra layer of insulation on the garage door. Watch how it goes on the garage door. For heating, I use a small electric heater that circulates oil in coils. On the lowest setting (a frost setting), it provides enough heat to keep the workshop at 40 degrees. When it gets really cold outside, I turn up the heat to maintain that temperature. I also use a ceiling-mounted radiant heater above my workbench (from Lee Valley Tools). This provides additional warmth for when I'm not moving a lot to keep warm.
