About This Video

I "got a brand new laptop"… and then immediately admitted I kind of fibbed. It was my daughter’s old school laptop (like 5–6 years old), the hinge is broken, and it can’t even run Minecraft. So naturally, I decided to turn it into the ultimate living-room home lab: a media centre, retro gaming box, automation server, and general money-saving machine that stops me paying for a million subscriptions. First steps were simple but important: HDMI to the TV, make sure it works with the lid closed, and nuke as much Windows bloatware as possible (yes, I know—Linux people, please don’t shout at me, I’m not there yet). From there I built it up in layers. RetroArch got me emulators for DS, Game Boy, N64, and even GameCube (Wind Waker on a laptop that can’t run Minecraft is hilarious). For modern games, I tested Xbox Cloud Gaming and also talked about Steam Link as the “no-latency” option if you’ve already got a main PC. Then I solved the control problem with Unified Remote (a tiny one-time cost, not a subscription—love that), set up Plex as a 24/7 media server, added VPN split tunneling, and the big flex: self-hosted N8N on Windows using Docker + ngrok so my automations can run for basically free. Add Parsec for remote control, a 4TB drive for storage, and suddenly this “useless” laptop is saving me a fortune.
