Some time ago I stepped away from trying to get all my loudness out of one limiter, because my biggest gripe was always the same: yeah it’s louder, but the mix starts feeling small and tiny—especially the low end. In this video I show the mix bus chain that changed everything for me: a soft clipper into two limiters, where the work is broken up across stages instead of one plugin doing all the squeezing. I A/B a one-limiter version (Ozone Maximizer doing around 4 dB) against the multi-stage version (about 1 dB of soft clipping plus roughly 3 dB of limiting total), and I want you listening for the low end, width, and clarity. My approach is simple: the soft clipper goes first to round off peaks before the limiter ever sees them, so the limiter doesn’t have to work as hard at the same threshold. I set the soft clipper ceiling to match the song’s existing peak (in my example, -2 dB), then drive into it about 1 dB (sometimes 1–2 dB to taste) so the peaks stay the same but the mix gets this lift—more forward, bigger, and thumpier. After that I use the God Particle limiter for 1–2 dB for that knocky, punchy energy, and I finish with Natural Audio’s AL1 in Mode 3 doing about 1 dB, because it feels natural and actually makes the stereo image feel bigger instead of smaller.
