About This Video

In this video I’m showing you my technique for getting real separation between your lead vocal and your background stacks—without making the mix feel disconnected. I start by A/B’ing the “before” and “after” so you can actually hear what I’m listening for: the lead stays the focal point, and the backgrounds get more depth, more surrounding image, and more room to breathe around the lead. Then I walk you step-by-step through the chain I’m using on the background/alto bus. I’m doing simple cleanup in Pro-Q 4 to pull out unnecessary low-end mud, plus a little top shaping so the lead can own that forward “shine.” After that, I use Waves Reel ADT (my underrated secret weapon) to add texture and width so the backgrounds naturally move to the sides. From there, a UAD LA-2A Tube compressor thickens and smooths the backgrounds without getting overbearing. Finally, I push depth using my HMD Black Vortex (early reflections for that “sit behind” perception), add subtle width with 2-Track Surgeon, and finish with time-based effects: a subtle eighth-note EchoBoy delay and a quarter-note delay to build environment and depth. The whole goal is contrast—different, but still living in the same mix.
