On one track, I liked the “messy in a good way” energy, but the vocal was buried, so my first move was simple: turn the lead up a significant amount and clean up space so the vocal can actually be the focal point. On another record, the 808 felt a little restricted, and I tested pushing the master with soft clipping and even Hyphy to smooth the top end. And when a mix came in super smashed, I broke down dynamics—how crushing the transients and limiting too hard can make everything feel flat—and why backing off the mix bus and rebalancing is usually the real fix.
