In this video I’m showing you a super simple way to add width to your 808s or bass without absolutely throwing it out of phase. The whole point is: I want that low energy (think 60 Hz and all that power) to stay focused, punchy, and basically mono so it still slaps in the center. Then I’ll add just a little bit of side information to the part of the bass that actually benefits from it, so it feels wider without losing the weight. My main move is using Ozone Imager 11 and splitting the bass at around 300 Hz. Everything 300 Hz and below stays put from a phase standpoint, and everything 300 Hz and above is where I’ll raise the width—because that’s the gritty, intelligible stuff you’ll hear on smaller speakers and phones. I also like turning on Stereoize for that psychoacoustic “whiff” effect (it’s basically a delayed copy feeding the sides). The big takeaway: use it in moderation, and always check your phase/mono—because yes, things can disappear when you collapse it.
