In this video I put two of the most affordable, innovative “hearing” options head-to-head: the Apple AirPods Pro 2 (about $200, and I even grabbed mine at Costco for $179 with AppleCare) versus the ELEHEAR Beyond ($400). I break down what actually matters for real hearing aid users—conversation clarity in noise, streaming quality, comfort, battery life, app usability, and how much real amplification you’re getting. Spoiler: both are impressive for the money, but they’re impressive in totally different ways. The AirPods Pro 2 are headphones first and hearing aids second, and it shows. Their streaming sound quality is in a league of its own, and features like noise cancellation, adaptive transparency, and conversation awareness are honestly game-changing—even compared to prescription devices. But the hearing-aid-style amplification is relatively limited (I’d estimate around ~25 dB full-on gain), battery life is more like 4–5 hours per charge, and the “hearing aid” controls can feel scattered across iPhone menus. The ELEHEAR Beyond is the opposite: it’s a true RIC-style OTC hearing aid built to help you hear speech in the real world. With AI-driven noise reduction and front focus (manual or automatic), it did beautifully for me in a noisy Costco environment. It’s got more power (~35 dB full-on gain), lasts 18–20 hours, works on iPhone and Android, and even includes a surprisingly useful real-time translator plus stronger tinnitus tools.
