And when the flex stops, the money stops, so the spending has to keep escalating as attention gets more expensive. Then I zoom out and explain how a lot of this is actually afforded: open-ended luxury leases and dealer arrangements where the influencer isn’t necessarily sitting on generational wealth—they’re sitting on massive monthly cash flow pressure. From there, the loop gets uglier: the “skill” (trading, SMMA, fitness coaching, whatever the buzzword is this year) becomes a wrapper for selling high-ticket education. A lot of these gurus don’t make their money doing the skill anymore—they make it selling access to the idea of the skill. Finally, I connect the dots on the sales machine behind it: setters, closers, commission splits, affiliate links, and a structure that starts to look and feel like an MLM pyramid.
