In this video I’m unboxing and demoing a brand new prototype 10mm beech stave snare drum that one of my subscribers, Jack, sent over from his new boutique company, Singleton Drums. It’s a handcrafted solid shell segmented stave build (way less glue than a typical ply shell), and I wanted to give you my honest first reactions—looks, hardware, and most importantly, sound. Straight out of the box it felt super solid and hefty, and I loved details like the tube lugs, 10-lug layout, the S hoops on top, and the Dunnett multi-step strainer. From there I tune it up and properly put it through its paces at different tensions so you can hear the full range: medium, high, and low. Everything you’re hearing is recorded clean—no samples, no triggers—so it’s the real sound of the drum. What stood out to me is how responsive and dynamic it is: rimshots feel amazing on the S hoops, ghost notes are super articulate, and the drum has a ridiculous amount of attack while still keeping volume and depth (that 6" depth really gives it a meaty tone). Overall, it’s got the tuning range I want—from low right through to super high crack—and for a fully handmade stave snare in the €750–€850 range, I think it’s a genuinely impressive value.
