Ever wonder how Alan Gelfand came up with the ollie? Or how skateboarding evolved from basically a 2x4 with roller skate wheels to the popsicle shape? Well this book covers all of that! The Secret History of the Ollie, Vol. 1 The 1970s by Craig B. Snyder is over 900 pages of the Big Bang in skateboarding. Without the ollie, modern day skateboarding would not exist and it's quite possible that skateboarding itself would have died out as a fad. It's hard to imagine a time before the ollie, but Snyder's book paints a historical picture of just that world! He takes us through the years leading up to the ollie and the search for getting air on a skateboard by any means necessary. There were all kinds of gimmicks for attaching the board to your feet as well as gripping your board barefoot (Gorilla Grip) and using your hands (Bunny Hop). But a true, no-handed air, that was the holy grail! Not only is skateboarding's history discussed in great details, the book gives life to the skateparks and ramps of the mid-to-late 70s, which truly sound awesome! The Geezers highly recommend this book - if for no other reason than it would make a great obstacle for a high ollie challenge! About This Video

In this video I’m reviewing an absolute brick of skate history: The Secret History of the Ollie, Vol. 1: The 1970s by Craig B. Snyder. If you’ve ever wondered how Alan Gelfand came up with the ollie—or how we went from basically a 2x4 with roller skate wheels to the popsicle shape—this book digs into all of it. And I mean digs in… it’s over 900 pages of what I’d call the Big Bang era of skateboarding. What I love is how Snyder paints the world before the ollie, when everyone was chasing “air” any way they could. He covers all the weird and wonderful attempts—strapping boards to your feet, barefoot grip ideas like Gorilla Grip, and even hand-assisted stuff like the Bunny Hop—because a true no-handed air was the holy grail. On top of that, the book brings the mid-to-late 70s skateparks and ramps to life in a way that makes them sound insanely fun. Bottom line: the Geezers highly recommend it… even if you only buy it to use as an obstacle for a high ollie challenge.
