Hey everybody—Stephen here, Gear Stuff & Things. In this one I jump into “DAW land” (Logic) and do a quick and dirty drum mix using as few plugins as possible. The whole point isn’t a perfect, release-ready drum mix—it’s getting something solid fast so you (or your bandmates) can confidently keep tracking. I’m leaning hard on Black Salt Audio tools (not sponsored, I just genuinely like them) because they let me move quickly: gate with Silencer, shape with Telos, then glue it all together on the bus. I walk through the whole kit: kick in/out (Lewitt DTP 640REX is doing the tight, clicky thing), snare top (classic SM57… ringy and noisy like a 57 always is), toms, hats, overheads, and room mics. I also layer kick and snare samples (Mixwave Gojira) to fill in what’s missing—especially because I had to delete the snare bottom track due to distortion. From there I do basic panning, quick EQ choices (watch the “basketball” mids on toms), and then hit bus compression plus a parallel “attack bus” to add heft without smashing the main drum bus. Finish it off with a touch of snare verb and you’ve got a mix that’s good enough to work on, fast.
