Are you getting those annoying phantom pops and clicks after you slap Auto-Tune on a vocal? In this quick tip, I show you the simple setting that usually fixes it, because most people assume it’s the recording—but a lot of the time it’s actually the Auto-Tune plugin itself. I’m using Antares Auto-Tune Pro here, but the exact same idea applies to a bunch of other autotune plugins too. The whole issue comes down to tracking. Auto-tune needs a periodically repeating waveform to accurately detect pitch, and the Tracking control decides how much variation it will tolerate before it stops “seeing” the signal as periodic. The default is 50 and that works most of the time, but breathy or noisy vocals can push it into artifact territory. If you’re hearing clicks or pops, I just turn the Tracking value down until the clicks go away—sometimes you can even crank it all the way down to 1. Once you do that, the pops and clicks should be gone, and you can get back to making music instead of troubleshooting.
