As an engineer, I’ve mixed and mastered countless tracks, and most people deliver proper pre-masters. But every now and then someone sends me something that’s basically unmasterable—and that’s what this video is about. I break down the 5 annoying mistakes that really make a mastering engineer’s blood boil, and I explain why mastering can’t magically “turn your track into another artist.” Mastering is about enhancing what’s already good, not fixing a broken mix. I also cover the stuff people try to push into mastering that simply belongs in the mix: editing breaths, removing pops/clicks, and dealing with noisy recordings (yes, I’ve literally had paper crackling in a vocal take). Then we get into dynamics—why your breakdown needs to be quieter and more dynamic than your drop, and why people get surprised after mastering when compression pulls details up and changes the balance. Finally, I show you how to prep a proper premaster: remove master limiting/compression, leave 3–6 dB of headroom, export lossless WAV, and even drag the export back into your DAW to verify the waveform. If you do these basics, your master will come back clean, crisp, and impactful.
