What is the RV 10-year rule at campgrounds?

The 10-year rule is a policy some campgrounds use to limit RVs older than 10 years from booking. In our case, our motorhome is 11 years old and the park told us it might be “too old.” It’s often less about the exact year and more about the condition and appearance of the rig.

Can a campground deny you because your RV is older than 10 years?

Yes, they can—especially private parks that set their own standards. We were told we needed to submit photos so they could decide if our RV met their requirements. So even if you’re just one year over, it can still trigger the policy.

Why do campgrounds have the 10-year RV rule?

Some parks want to keep a certain look or standard, and they use the rule as a quick filter. And during another stay, we saw exactly why it exists—there are situations where poorly maintained rigs can become a problem. I don’t love blanket rules, but I understand why some owners feel they need something in place.

What should I do if a campground asks for photos of my RV?

Do what we did—send clear, recent photos that show the RV is clean and well cared for. Focus on the exterior, paint/decals, roofline, tires, and overall condition. It’s annoying, but it can be the difference between getting approved or getting turned away.

Is the RV 10-year rule fair or unfair?

From our seat, it’s frustrating when you’ve maintained your rig and you’re still treated like it’s automatically a problem. At the same time, I can’t ignore that we’ve seen the “other side” where a park is trying to prevent issues. I think condition-based policies make more sense than a strict age cutoff.

How can I avoid getting surprised by the 10-year rule when booking?

Ask before you book—straight up—if they enforce a 10-year rule and what their process is. If your RV is older, ask if photos will be required and what they’re looking for. It’s way better to find out early than get stuck scrambling later.

Do all RV parks enforce the 10-year rule?

No, not all of them do. Some never mention it, and others only use it as a guideline. The problem is you won’t know until you ask—because we didn’t think it would affect us, and then it did.
