The storm I’d been racing finally caught me. I wake to a world locked in ice—snow on the ground, trees snapping under the weight, and the trail fighting back at every mile. What should have been a short push to the finish turns into a full day of survival, recovery, and problem solving on the Louisiana overland adventure trail. Trees block the road and have to be cleared one by one. Downed power lines force detours. Mud swallows the tires. The winch starts to fail. Recovery boards freeze solid. Jeep and camper doors ice shut. And when the cold truly sets in, the diesel heater in the camper refuses to run. This is the LOAT at its worst—and at its most honest. No shortcuts. No easy miles.
