Stuck in Alligator Territory: My Solo Overland Nightmare.

This adventure begins at the southern start of the Louisiana Overland Adventure Trail, right on the Gulf of Mexico. Morning comes with fog, damp air, and wet bedding—an immediate reminder that this trail won’t be easing me in. The first stop delivers an unexpected native encounter: an alligator. At roughly 6–7 feet, it looked massive… until locals casually informed me that, by Louisiana standards, it was still considered small. With that perspective shift, it was time to get back on the road. Not far down the trail, the adventure escalates. The Jeep sinks into thick Louisiana mud, and recovery attempts quickly turn into a losing battle. Just when things are looking bleak, a local stops and offers his truck as an anchor point—proving once again that the people you meet can be just as important as the gear you carry. Back on the trail, the journey continues with one of my favorite parts of overlanding: experiencing local food. A stop at Null’s Cajun Restaurant delivers exactly what was needed—gumbo that hits the spot before pushing deeper into the route. The day wraps up with a long, flooded stretch of road leading to camp, where I finally get a moment to reflect on everything that’s already happened. But this is only the beginning… The real test is still ahead.
