I Drove 1,000 Miles Into a Historic Winter Storm

This is Episode 1 of the Louisiana Overland Adventure Trail (LOAT). I drove over 1,000 miles to attempt a six-hundred-mile overland route through Louisiana—during a historic winter storm. This wasn’t how the route was supposed to be run, but it’s how it happened. As I headed south toward the Gulf of Mexico, the trip turned into a race against the weather. Early forecasts didn’t look bad, but winter storm warnings began telling a different story. I had a window. It was possible—but that window was closing fast. As it turned out, the storm and I both reached the Gulf at the same time. From there, the trip stopped being about planning and started becoming about decisions, conditions, and responsibility for choosing to continue. I chose this. About the Louisiana Overland Adventure Trail (LOAT) The Louisiana Overland Adventure Trail is a multi-day route that runs south to north through Louisiana, from the Gulf Coast to the Arkansas border. It links back roads, forest tracks, levees, and rural highways into a route that emphasizes distance, changing conditions, and real-world decision-making rather than technical obstacles.
