In this video I walk you through my extremely professionally drawn graph of GPU famine history, and why the next one (the 2026-ish tech apocalypse) is going to feel different. I go back to the 2017 shortage—aka the genesis of my lifelong feud with crypto bros—when Ethereum mining profitability went nuclear and I watched Akihabara go from “infinite GPU stock” to “congrats, you’re buying one of two GTX 1060s like a loser.” Then I relive the 2020 mega-doozy: pandemic supply chaos, scalpers with bots, miners paying stupid money, and me queueing for an RTX 3080 only to watch two people walk out with Zotacs. The big point is that we’ve been stuck in this boom-bust cycle where, after the crash, gamers at least get a consolation prize: a flood of used consumer GPUs. But the current problem starts with memory because data centers are hoovering up capacity for AI, and GPUs also need memory—so this morphs into a GPU shortage. And when this AI “kurfuffle” eventually pops, the demand that collapses is mostly enterprise hardware, meaning we don’t get a sweet used-GPU feast afterward. I lay out three timelines (quick AI pop, slower normalization, or permanent pain), and yes—this is my cockamamie opinion, don’t take it too seriously.
