About This Video

I knew this was coming the moment I switched to Apple: you buy one thing, hit a limitation you can’t upgrade, and then you’re basically forced into buying another Apple device. In this video I explain why I ended up grabbing a Mac Studio after my 2023 MacBook Pro started running into RAM limits while editing—because I refused to be held hostage by Apple’s ridiculous RAM pricing. The Mac Studio made way more sense for my setup: it’s cheaper than speccing a MacBook Pro the same way, it has 10Gb networking built in (so my NAS workflow doesn’t take 10 years), and the base configs start with more RAM. The real “do this instead” is simple: buy Apple refurbished. I scored a certified Apple refurb Mac Studio with an M4 Max (40 GPU cores), 64GB RAM, and 512GB storage for way less than Apple’s upgrade-tax would’ve cost new. Then I did what any responsible adult would do: I tried gaming on it. Cyberpunk at 1440p hit ~60fps but felt weird and floaty with input lag (even on an OLED), while Resident Evil Village absolutely flew and felt great. After that I talk about living with it day-to-day (silent, powerful, RAM usage around 36–40GB), my annoyances with Mac ports and macOS quirks, and why I’m happily Adobe-free on DaVinci Resolve—despite a few “why is this a thing?” UI decisions.
