What is the Rockna WaveLight Server and what does it do?

It’s a dedicated music server/streamer/endpoint designed to replace using a noisy PC or Mac as your source. You can run it as Roon Core, Audirvana Server, or a basic UPnP endpoint depending on how you want to live with your system. The whole point is isolation and stability—audio-first hardware and software in one chassis.

Do I really need a hi-fi streamer if I already have a PC or Mac?

“Need” is complicated, but if you’re trying to push a system hard, yes, it matters. PCs and Macs leak electrical noise from power supplies, boards, GPUs, and general computer nonsense. I try to separate my hi-fi from computers, and in my testing it makes a significant difference.

Does a streamer change the sound if it’s just digital in and digital out?

Accepted Answer

You’d think it shouldn’t—but in my experience it does. With the WaveLight Server I get a more open stage and a pitch-black background, with less harshness and less “gray” noise floor. It also keeps that “system sounds incredible tonight” consistency throughout the day, which is huge for reviewing.

Rockna WaveLight Server vs Holo Audio Red: which should I buy?

If you’re on a tighter budget, the Holo Red is the one to go for—it measures well and it’s a beast of a DDC/endpoint for the money. But the WaveLight Server beats it in stability, software experience, versatility, design, and in my system it sounded better. The Red also had quirks for me and could be inconsistent depending on setup.

Rockna WaveLight Server vs iFi Zen Stream: is it worth upgrading?

The Zen Stream is great value and still better than running a PC straight into a DAC in my opinion. But it’s limited on connections and it was the worst-sounding streamer I’ve had here—while still being good for the price. Against the WaveLight Server there’s no competition on sound, features, or overall refinement.

Can the WaveLight Server run Roon without a computer?

Yes—this is one of the big wins. You can run it as a Roon Core/server so you don’t need a PC on at all, and you just control it from your phone/tablet. Roon isn’t cheap, but I think it’s worth it for usability and sound quality.

How do you set up the Rockna WaveLight Server and what apps does it use?

Once it’s on your network, you access it via a web interface using its IP address, or the WLS app which I found very ergonomic. You choose your mode (UPnP, Roon Core, Audirvana, etc.), but you can’t switch modes on the fly—you disable one and enable another. After initial router/IP hiccups, mine has been set-and-forget reliable.
