About This Video

In this video I finally wrap up a review process that’s been running for the last six months: the Modhouse Tungsten DS (double‑sided magnet) version. I’ve tested it on basically every chain you’ve seen on the channel—from true summit rigs like the Riviera AIC‑10 and Wavedream Signature, all the way down to more realistic pairings like the Topping A90 + Cyan 2 and the Cayin HA‑2A + iDAC. Externally it’s the same chassis as the original Tungsten, but internally it’s a meaningful step forward, and yes—Ryan even did a specific CMA colorway that came out absolutely gorgeous. Sound-wise, Tungsten has a house sound: some of the most delightful midrange I’ve heard at any price, with an HD800S‑style open staging, excellent depth, and very quick drivers. With the stock leather pads it leans neutral‑bright, with sub‑bass that digs low when properly powered and a mid‑bass punch that can genuinely take your breath away—more “weighted pillow with a stone inside” than clinical slam. My main gripe is still the treble: with real instruments it can be excellent, but with electronic music it can get frosty/crunchy and lose articulation. The big takeaway: at $2,000 this punches absurdly above its weight, but it’s hard to drive and extremely sensitive to amp headroom and gain distortion. DS is the one I’d choose over SS for the extra $500—easier to drive, more resolving, and an upgrade across the board—just be smart about system matching.
