I’m using the M4 Pro config with a 12‑core CPU, 16‑core GPU, 24GB of unified memory, and a 512GB SSD—and I walk through what’s actually new, starting with the long-overdue redesign. The new chassis feels like a scaled-down Mac Studio (which I love), and the port selection is finally exciting: two front USB‑C ports (10Gbps) plus a front headphone jack, then three Thunderbolt 5 ports on the back, HDMI 2.1, and Ethernet (with a 10Gb option I think is totally worth it). Instead of obsessing over synthetic benchmarks, I ran “my” benchmarks—real editing and photo workflows. For video, it chews through 4K 10‑bit Sony footage, handles layers, grading, graphics, and noise reduction really well, and exports fast (my single export took 7:28, versus 5:12 on my M2 Ultra Mac Studio). For photos, it flew through 30 RAWs with presets, Denoise, and Super Resolution, and it exported those 30 RAWs to JPEG in 19 seconds. My takeaway: if you work at a desk most of the time, the M4 Mac mini is an easy yes—especially if you prioritize RAM over storage and lean on fast external SSDs.
