I get asked a lot about the camera gear I use to film YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok—and honestly, I’m not some camera expert. But I finally put together a solo filmmaking setup that’s efficient, effective, and (most importantly) not a massive investment. In this video, I walk through the exact gear I use and why I chose it, plus a little behind-the-scenes of me trying to get over my fear of filming in public. The core of my setup is the Sony ZV-E1, which I look at as a budget-friendly “cinema-style” camera because you’re getting a really solid image, 4K up to 120fps, and 10-bit 4:2:2. I pair it with a single lens—the Sony 20-70mm f/4—because I film everything solo and I’d rather stay reliably in focus than chase super shallow depth of field and miss shots. For audio, I use the Sony ECM-B10 because it’s tiny, sounds great, and it runs straight through the Sony hot shoe with basically zero setup. From there, I show how I stay low-profile with mounting: I prefer a monopod over a full tripod for the small footprint, I use the Sony shooting grip for quick “place it anywhere” shots, and my favorite accessory is the SmallRig Magic Arm—because it lets me mount my camera/gear in ways a normal tripod just can’t.
