The iMac is Apple’s all-in-one desktop Mac, and it’s genuinely great… but you pay a premium for that convenience. So in this video I tried to beat Apple at their own game: build a Mac mini setup that matches the iMac experience (display, webcam, audio, keyboard/mouse) and see if the final price and performance actually make more sense. Spoiler: it got way trickier than I expected, and the final cost ended up being closer than you think. I start with the foundation of the whole build: a Vernal sit–stand desk (48" x 30") that’s honestly way more stable than I expected, even at full standing height. From there, I spec out the “iMac alternative” parts—BenQ MA270U 27" 4K monitor (USB‑C PD, good color coverage), an OBSBOT Tiny 2 for a legit 4K webcam upgrade, and then I skip speakers because I’m a headphones person (AirPods). For input, I go Logitech MX Master 3S plus the Satechi Slim X3 so you get a Mac layout with better connectivity and backlighting. At the end, I do a Canadian price check: the full setup comes in at $1,937 CAD—technically under the mid-tier iMac at $1,949 CAD, but barely. My takeaway is simple: if you want the cheapest Mac desktop, reuse what you already own with a Mac mini; if you want the simplest, buy the iMac; and if you want something tailored and upgradable, the Mac mini route is the move.
