It’s been 72 hours since the iPhone 17 launch, and I’ve been bouncing between the 17 Pro Max and the 17 Air to see what actually stands out in real life. The first thing I noticed is the 17 Pro Max is a little thicker than the 16 Pro Max, but it somehow feels a bit lighter in hand. The design change is a big deal this year: we’re back to aluminum on the Pro models, the chassis feels more seamless around the edges, and the new camera plateau stretches across the back. I actually like it—I'm tired of the old “stove top” look—and the bonus is it rocks less on a desk when you’re typing. The 6.9-inch ProMotion display is a highlight with noticeably better reflections thanks to the anti-reflective coating, and outdoor brightness is wild. Cameras are one of the biggest upgrades: all three lenses now get a 48MP sensor, and you don’t need to jump to RAW just to get high-res shots. Video is also a huge step with 4K 120fps, ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2, and even Genlock support. Performance and battery are where the Pro Max really earns its name: A19 Pro, 12GB RAM, vapor chamber cooling, and a 5,000mAh battery. Add faster charging (40W wired, Qi 2.2 at 25W) and the new N1 connectivity chip, and this is easily one of the strongest Pro releases in recent memory—while I’m still debating if the thin, light Air might be the one I actually switch to.
