If you work with your hands for a living in the trades—or you’re just out there grinding through long days in every kind of weather—you already know clothing isn’t just clothing. It’s gear, and the right gear can make or break your day. In this video I’m talking about one of my favorite cold-weather layering moves: a vest. I almost never wear a bulky winter coat, so I’m always looking for a mid-layer that adds warmth without killing mobility. Lately, that role has been filled by the Milwaukee FREEFLEX lightweight insulated vest. I wear it strictly as a layer under a lighter, more durable work jacket, and it’s become one of those pieces I just grab without thinking—warm enough to matter, flexible enough to forget I’m wearing it. The big win is mobility: the flexible shoulder and side mobility panels give me noticeably better range of motion when bending, reaching, lifting, and stretching. Those panels aren’t insulated, but for me the freedom is worth the trade-off. Milwaukee also added a drop-tail rear hem for extra coverage when you’re bending or squatting—small detail, smart detail—and at around $70 it’s a solid value.
