how to safely tilt in to clean or properly remove Marvin Elevate window sash

About This Video

In this video I’m walking you through how I safely tilt in and clean Marvin Elevate windows—and just as important, how to properly remove the sash without wrecking anything. My whole house has Marvin Elevate windows, and one of the best features is you can do the cleaning from the inside. The catch is: if you get sloppy with the removal steps, you can damage the spring-loaded balances in the jamb, and that turns into an expensive repair. I start with the bottom sash: unlock it, slide it up about 3 inches, then slide the two tilt latches (one on each side) inward and bring the sash out to a perfect 90 degrees. If you’re only cleaning, you can rest it on the sill and wipe it down. If you’re removing it, keep it perfectly square at 90, lift up and out, and pay attention to the little tabs that line up with the balance system—this is where people break things. Then I show the top sash, which is a little different with two latches at the top. Same idea: tilt to 90, remove one end at a time, and reinstall by lining it back up on the balances. And don’t forget to pull the latches back in before closing, or you’ll chew up your paint.
