Makita 40V XGT 3" x 21" Belt Sander Review (GSB01Z) Specifications: • Belt Size: 3" x 21" • Belt Speed (Variable): 390 - 1,540 ft./min. • Width: 5-7/8" • Overall Length: 17-1/4" • Weight (with battery): 9.9 lbs. • Variable Speed Dial: Yes • Dust Bag: Yes • Lock-On Switch: Yes • Cordless: Yes • LED Light: Yes First Impression Within the first few minutes of using the Makita belt sander, we noted that it was well-balanced and had impressive power, thanks to the 40-volt batteries. Using The Makita Belt Sander Setting up the sander and adjusting it was easy, we also noted that it tracked well. The sanding belt can be easily adjusted using the tracking knob to ensure proper alignment and extend the belt's life. However, the self-adjusting system worked so well that we rarely needed to make manual adjustments. Speed Control While using the sander, the variable speed control dial in the side of the sander, allowed us to select between 390 and 1,540 ft./min., making it adaptable to different materials and applications. While testing, I found the sander had plenty of power and glided along my rough sawn work piece. I also easily controlled it one-handed with no vibration felt. Very impressive. Front Grip The sander has a large, adjustable front grip, allowing flush sanding against walls using the nose and side of the tool. The front handle adjusts in four steps with (30° increments) for a customized user grip and control. Clamping We also appreciated that the sander sits nicely on its side or back and is easy to clamp down. Makita offers an accessory clamp set (part no. 192694-6, sold separately), which enables users to secure the sander for stationary applications like edge sanding or shaping various materials. We didn’t test the accessory clamp, but our clamps worked just fine. Dust Collection We tested the sander using the included dust bag, which worked well. The bad has a spring-loaded washer and a twist to lock connection offering a guaranteed “not to fall off” connection. However, connecting it to our shop dust collector and various site vacuums was more challenging and Ill cover that in a minute. Once connected to a vacuum, this sander yielded superb dust collection performance. If you’re into the Makita platform you need to consider the Makita’s Auto-Start Wireless System (AWS). AWS equipped tools when paired with a compatible blue-tooth vacuum offers automatic vacuum activation, further improving dust management. The AWS wireless unit for the tool is sold separately, but its automatic activation feature significantly enhances workspace cleanliness and efficiency. LED Light Another noteworthy feature is the front LED light, which offers three adjustable lighting directions to improve visibility in low-light conditions. Overheat Protection Additionally, Makita built in an overheating protection system. If the tool overheats, the LED light flashes for one minute, signaling the need for a cooldown period before resuming use. Improvements Our biggest concern with this tool is its weight. We often operate cordless belt sanders one-handed, but the Makita's weight makes this challenging. Additionally, the adjustable handle can obstruct close scribing, though it is beneficial for flat stock material removal. Another issue we have is with dust collection. To get the connection to work in my shop I had to use a Rockler Dust Right hose and a zip tie – it was a pain in the ass. According to the manual to connect to s vacuum you’ll need a “Front Cuff 22”. Whatever that is. When I searched Makita’s site, I did not get any results on a Front Cuff 22. An internet search showed what’s called a Makita Tool Cuff Adapter, 22 mm for 1-inch hose. #417765-1 My frustration is how much more money would it cost them / or me to just include the adapter with the tool? Price The Makita 40V belt sander sells for $300 [approx.] as a bare tool. With that purchase you’ll get a dust bag and one sanding belt. Conclusion We found that the Makita 40V XGT 3" x 21" belt sander delivers powerful cordless performance with exceptional sanding efficiency. Its self-adjusting belt tracking, multiple speed settings, and robust dust collection system make it a strong contender for professionals and serious DIYers alike. While its weight may limit one-handed use, and the adjustable handle can sometimes be an obstacle, its overall design, safety features, and performance make it a valuable addition to any workshop. @MakitaToolsUSA
