About This Video

I came across an AI tool called Variant about two weeks ago, and I genuinely think it’s the best AI design tool I’ve seen for developers—and this isn’t sponsored. The reason it works is simple: I’m not “designing” anything. I’m just scrolling, and every scroll gives me a new design direction. In general, AI is pretty bad at visual design (generic colors, predictable layouts, zero taste), so Variant takes a smarter approach: it’s trained to act like a creative director—finding references, understanding what looks good, and then directing LLMs to generate the actual UI. In the video, I build a workflow around a travel app concept: generate initial designs, remix colors, shuffle layouts, explore wide/narrow to steer variations, and then my favorite feature—“see other views”—to generate multiple screens for the same product (explore, bookings, details, account, empty states). After curating a mood board, I export the screens (HTML/React) and then use Builder to stitch everything into a cohesive app with navigation, matching CSS, and a real project structure. The takeaway is that design taste and development are different skills, and Variant gives developers access to professional-looking options without pushing pixels—you curate, then you build.
