About This Video

In this video I’m painting Ghazghkull (Gaz) as a proper character piece, but I’m doing it in a way that beginners can actually follow and still get a killer result. I asked you lot what you wanted on the community tab and 70% voted for a beginner’s guide to painting characters, so I broke my process down step-by-step: face first (because that’s where everyone looks), then armor, metals, glow effects, the small details, and finally the base. The big theme here is simple doesn’t mean bad—if you keep your choices intentional, you can get a character looking “finished” without needing a million paints or fancy techniques. I show you my two-shade approach (base + highlight) across the whole model, how I build depth by leaving true shadows alone, and how I clean up little whoopsies as I go (because they happen). The standout bit is the battle-damaged, war-torn armor: thin paints, short multi-directional scratch lines, then selective edge highlights—grimdark, not “highlight every edge like Borderlands.” I also run through cold steel claws with a blue glaze, grimy bone/skulls with a wash-and-rehighlight, and a quick muzzle-flash glow with yellow/orange plus smoky grays. Trust the process, thin your paints, and you’ll be shocked how “high detail” this looks in about 5 hours.
