About This Video

In this video I’m in Central Park giving Irene Hwang a straight-up crash course in the basics of boxing/kickboxing/Muay Thai—like, the stuff you actually need in the first 10 minutes so you don’t look lost. We start with the boring-but-important part: how to flex and clench your hands so your bones stay stacked, then I get her stance right (orthodox vs southpaw), knees bent, legs never locked out—because in kickboxing you’re gonna get kicked in the leg and you’ll get messed up if you’re standing tall. From there I break down the core punches: jab, cross (the “one-two”), hook, and uppercut. I’m big on the details that make everything feel real—keep your other hand up, exhale on every strike, keep your chin down, and punch at the very end of your reach without leaning and throwing yourself off balance. Then we move into kicks: turning the foot over, swinging the hips through (not chambering like taekwondo), and using a switch kick without fully changing stances. Finally, I put it together into a simple combo—jab, cross, switch kick—because once you can chain basics, you’re actually training, not just copying moves.
