About This Video

In this video I talk through a question I think a lot of us quietly wrestle with: “Am I depressed or just lazy?” The big thing I keep coming back to is pattern + “out of character.” If I’m suddenly sleeping in more, missing deadlines, not showing up, and dropping the stuff I normally care about for an extended period of time, that’s a different signal than someone who’s always been a chronic procrastinator. Stress can be real and valid, and laziness can be real and valid too—but I want people to at least consider that it could be something clinical, because a lot of people don’t even put that on the table. We also get into why depression can be chronic and episodic: people can come out of an episode, feel “fine,” and then skip getting help—until it hits again. That’s where prevention matters. I’m not diagnosing anyone (I’m not a psychiatrist or a doctor), but I do think friends have a responsibility to notice when something feels off and encourage someone to talk to a professional without trying to label them. We talk about how meme culture and casual “I wanna kill myself” language muddies the water, and why asking a simple follow-up question can be the difference between brushing someone off and actually catching a real cry for help.
