About This Video

In this video I’m walking you through what my day-to-day looks like as a BuzzFeed video producer—except my role is kind of an outlier, so I brought my friend Oliver in to help ground it in what a “normal” producer might expect. I break the job into the real phases: brainstorming and pitching ideas, getting approvals (or tweaks), casting, pre-pro, shoot day, and then the part that hurts the most—editing. At BuzzFeed it’s pretty fluid: sometimes it feels like I’m just making whatever, and other times a concept gets redirected because it’s too similar to something else. I talk a lot about casting because that’s honestly one of my favorite parts. I’ll go formal (casting forms, budget, studio ops, COVID testing, releases, payroll) but I also love just throwing the homies in videos and building chemistry—especially on dating-show style shoots where I’m literally crafting a social experience. On shoot day I’m setting up cameras, lights, and vibes (yes, speakers and bangers), and I’m intentionally not slating because I edit everything and I want people to stay natural. Then in post, it’s syncing audio/cameras, cutting hours down to 8–12 minutes, and playing with comedic timing, music, and little effects until it feels right.
