Clerkship year is about to start, so I filmed a super real “week in the life” where I basically live in clinical skills training. On Day 1, I practice donning and doffing Level 4 PPE (the full, serious protection setup) and run through core bedside procedures like inserting an NGT and a Foley catheter. If you’re heading into hospital life soon, this is the kind of stuff that feels intimidating at first—but gets way more manageable once you treat it like a system and drill the steps. On Day 2, I focus on the skills that med students always get asked about: IV cannulation, phlebotomy, and suturing. I’m not pretending it’s perfect—this is practice mode, and that’s the point. Then on Day 3, I learn how to properly don and doff surgical gowns, because in the OR, “close enough” isn’t a thing. The main takeaway from this week: confidence comes from reps, checklists, and being intentional with your technique—especially with infection control and anything invasive.
