About This Video

What’s good everyone, it’s Chambers. In this video I’m not doing the basic level stuff—I’m showing you advanced drum techniques to actually level up your bounce. I switched it up and built the whole idea in GarageBand (demo version), starting with the most important rule: use good drum sounds. It’s mandatory. I’m not forcing a beat to work with weak kicks and thin snares, so I go straight to my go-to, ICONIC 2, because the sounds already hit and they’re already mixed. From there, I focus on texture and contrast—finding sounds that are completely opposite and letting them work together. I’ll grab an 808 with crazy attack and pair it with something soft and smooth, then set my sampler so the 808 stops when I lift my finger (so the groove stays clean). After that, it’s all about spacing, velocity, and little moves like taking every other note and dropping velocity, adding subtle panning, and not overcrowding percussion. Once the drums are bouncing, I lay simple melodies (sometimes literally two or three notes), then I’ll use a hidden gem plugin—Waves SoundShifter—to pitch the whole beat up or down fast. In this one, pitching down a semitone made it 10x better.
